Artist Statement

My art is a reflection of myself and my life—a celebration of the diversity of life and culture that exists all around us. As the daughter of immigrants from South America, I grew up in an intellectually rich environment. From my parents I learned to respect and admire the classics in both art and music, keep an open mind towards world cultures and ideas, and not to be afraid of experiencing new and different things.

During my time in school, I experienced the strength of spirituality, but I was not afraid to challenge a person's preconceived ideas. From this cultural and religious exploration stemmed my Religious Icons series. I presented prominent religious figures in a simple, colorful design with the intention of encouraging the viewer to approach each icon with the simple curiosity and innocence of a child, devoid of criticism, arrogance, and political perversity, a mind open to anything.

Although the majority of my work reflects my usual optimism for life and the world around me, at times it also reflects my distress at past events and concern over present issues. In my drawing Call to Arms, I reinterpreted a classic style, Albrecht Durer, with contemporary events, the conflicts in the Middle East. My goal was to depict abuse of power, the perversion of religious beliefs, and the destruction each has caused.

As an artist, my range of work is as diverse as life, always changing, always growing. I am ever challenging and expanding my creativity by trying different techniques, styles, and subject matter in my work—focusing solely on one element of life would deprive me and the viewer of great experiences. Because my family, friends, and the cultures around me provide an endless flow of artistic inspiration, I intend to continue creating art as diverse as my life and experiences.
