In the mural, cultural and educational diversity, unity, and personal growth are represented in an accessible, yet unconventional and unclichéd way. The tree represents human life itself--ever growing, bending, and twisting from the challenges and pressures of our lifelong journey. Within its trunk beats the human heart, supplying the force that drives us to be and to do. Its arteries run deep into the roots, flowing with the noblest values of the human character: compassion, courage, equality, unity, integrity, honor, tolerance, and understanding. These values flow up the tree's branches and supplies life to its foliage—the continents of the earth reminding us that our journey as humans is not a solitary one. The apples growing within the foliage denote educational diversity, each the color of the different fields of study of the university. Contributing to the growth of the tree and its foliage is the rising sun, marking the dawn of a new day and with it, new possibilities. Our pursuit of greater knowledge is represented by the cerebral folds and wrinkles at the sun's core. The night is the past, the stars and the moon marking human accomplishment. Overall, I hoped to create a depiction of diversity and humanity that is visually raw and vibrant, while optimistic and encouraging at the same time.
